About the Austin A99 & A110 Westminster
The A99 of 1959 is a clean break from everything before it: an entirely new Pinin Farina monocoque, the C-series enlarged to 2,912cc with twin SUs for 103bhp and 158lb ft, a three-speed all-synchromesh gearbox with Porsche synchromesh, Borg-Warner overdrive standard on top and second, and front disc brakes with servo — the first Westminster with discs. The A110 followed in the autumn of 1961 with a two-inch longer wheelbase, 120bhp from a revised head, revised camshaft and a twin-bore exhaust, and a floor-mounted gearchange. The Mk II from the spring of 1964 brought 13in wheels. 26,105 A110s were built across both marks, against 15,162 A99s.
Brakes are the trap on this pair. The earlier drum Westminsters — A90, A95, A105 — are Girling. The A99 and A110 are Lockheed, with power-assisted 10.75in front discs and rear drums. Check which you have before ordering anything hydraulic, because the range changed sides mid-life. The badge-engineered siblings are the Wolseley 6/99 and 6/110 and the Vanden Plas Princess 3-Litre, and mechanical parts cross between all of them freely; grille, instruments and trim do not. There was a prototype Bentley version. The A110 was replaced by the Austin 3 Litre in 1968.
