About the Austin A60 Cambridge
October 1961. The A60 has a longer wheelbase and wider track than the A55 Mk2, toned-down fins, anti-roll bars front and rear, and the 1,622cc B-series at 61bhp. 276,534 were built, with saloon production running to 1969 — making it by some distance the longest-lived and most numerous of the Cambridges. The Borg Warner Type 35 three-speed automatic was optional, and the A60 was the first British car offered with it. A 1.5-litre 40bhp diesel went on sale for export in 1961 and in Britain from 1962, and the Countryman estate continued.
The commercials are the long tail here, as they are on the A35. The van and pick-up took the 1,622 engine from September 1963, a wider grille arrived in 1962, and Morris-badged versions appeared with straight grille bars in place of the crinkly Austin ones — so the grille is the quick way to tell them apart. The commercials outlived the saloon by several years. Mechanically the A60 is easy: the 1,622cc B-series is the same unit as the MG Magnette Mk IV and the later Morris Oxford VI, so engine and running gear parts cross widely across the Farina family. Body panels, glass and trim do not.
