MG TC

1945–1949 · about 10,000 built · the car that sold MG to America

The pre-war car restarted — wider in the body, on shackles instead of trunnions, and still on 19in wires.

About the MG TC

MG restarted in September 1945 with what was essentially a TB: the same 1,250cc XPAG, the same Lockheed 9in drums, the same beam front axle and 19in centre-lock wire wheels. Three things changed. The body went nearly four inches wider across the seats, which is why TC seats and door trim are not TB parts. The sliding trunnion spring mountings were replaced by rubber-bushed shackles, on every TC. And the twin six-volt batteries gave way to a single twelve-volt. It was never built in left-hand drive, and it sold to America anyway.

The TC is the last of the traditional T-types — beam axle, no independent front suspension, no rack and pinion, cart springs at both ends. Everything from the TD on is a different car underneath. On parts, the XPAG engine and its ancillaries cross freely with the TD, the TF 1250 and the Y Type saloons, but the chassis, suspension, steering and wheels do not cross with anything later. One thing worth knowing before you order a clutch: the XPAG was built in several suffixes — TD, TD2, TD3, TF — with different clutch sizes and different water hole shapes, so the engine number matters more than the model name.

MG TC — specification & changes within the model

Built
September 1945 – November 1949, about 10,000. Right-hand drive only.
Engine
1,250cc XPAG, 66.5 × 90mm, 54.5bhp @ 5200rpm, 7.4:1, twin SU.
Brakes
Lockheed hydraulic, 9in drums all round.
Suspension
Half-elliptic front and rear. Rubber-bushed shackles replace the TA and TB sliding trunnions — on every TC.
Wheels
19in Dunlop centre-lock wire, 19 × 4.50. The last T-type on 19in wires.
Body
Nearly 4in wider across the seats than the TB. Seats and interior trim do not cross back.
Electrics
Single 12 volt battery, replacing the TB’s twin 6 volt.
Clutch
Order by engine number, not model. XPAG/TD is 7¼in; XPAG/TD2 and TD3 are 8in, and the water hole shape differs between them.
What crosses
Engine and ancillaries with the TD, TF 1250 and Y Type. Chassis, suspension, steering and wheels cross with nothing later — the TD is an entirely different car underneath.
