1970–1971 · the Hemi six arrives · rectangular headlamps · the last of the VE body
The VG of March 1970 is the last series on the VE body, with rectangular headlamps and new tail lamps. The hardtop’s rear is as the VF, and the utes still carry the VE rear. The big change is under the bonnet: the Australian-made Hemi six, in 245 and 215 form, with the 318 V8 an option on the Regal 770, Regal Safari and VIP. The slant six was kept mainly for export.
Front discs on the VG are 11in and ventilated, with two-piston calipers, otherwise 9in drums are fitted — discs are standard on the Pacer and the VIP. Suspension is torsion bars at the front and leaf springs at the rear, and the alternator is 35 amp. Wheelbases are 108in for the sedan, wagon and ute, 111in for the hardtop and 112in for the VIP.
