About the Triumph TR2

The TR2 takes the Standard Vanguard’s wet-liner four and makes it smaller, not bigger: bore down from 85mm to 83mm for 1,991cc, compression up to 8.5:1, twin SU H4s, 90bhp. 8,636 were built from TS1 in August 1953 to TS-8638 in November 1955. The brakes are Lockheed drums on all four corners on every single one — worth saying plainly, because at least one widely-read buyer’s guide credits the TR2 with the disc brakes that actually arrived partway through TR3 production. Plenty of TR2s have had discs fitted since, but none came that way.

Three commission numbers split a TR2 order. TS4002 is the door change: cars from TS1 to TS4001 have the long door that runs down over the sill, and from TS4002 the short door that stops above it, leaving the sill visible. Doors, door skins and sill panels are all different parts either side of that number. TS-5443 is the rear brake change — 9in × 1¾in drums up to TS-5442, 10in × 2¼in from TS-5443. And TS-5980 is the overdrive change: before it the overdrive works on top gear only, after it on second, third and top. An early TR2 overdrive is a different installation, not just a different unit.

Triumph TR2 — specification & changes within the model

Built
August 1953 – November 1955, 8,636 built. Commission numbers TS1 to TS-8638.
Engine
1,991cc Standard wet-liner four, 83 × 92mm, 90bhp @ 4800rpm, twin SU H4, 8.5:1. The Vanguard engine de-bored from 85mm, not a bored-out smaller unit.
Brakes
Lockheed drums all round, on every TR2. Front 10in × 2¼in with twin cylinders. Rear 9in × 1¾in to TS-5442, 10in × 2¼in from TS-5443. No TR2 had discs from the factory — many were retro-fitted.
Long door / short door
Long doors TS1 to TS4001. Short doors from TS4002, around October 1954. The long door runs down over the sill; the short one stops above it, so the sill shows. Doors, door skins and sill panels all differ.
Overdrive
To TS-5980: top gear only. From TS-5980: second, third and top. A different installation, not just a different unit.
Gearbox
Four-speed, no synchromesh on first.
Other numbered changes
Water filler moves to the radiator at TS-1201 · sidescreen top windows at TS-4500 · scuttle vent at TS-6157.
Suffix letters
L = left-hand drive · O = overdrive.
Shared with Standard
The engine family, at a different bore. See the Standard page for the full bore table — liners and pistons are bore-specific.
