About the Ford Escort Mk2
The first Mk2s came off the line on 2 December 1974, the car went on sale in January 1975 and ran to October 1980: 1,808,395 built across all markets and body styles. Engines run from 48bhp to 115bhp — Kent crossflow in 1.1, 1.3 and 1.6, Pinto SOHC in 1.6 and 2.0, the Cosworth BDE 1.8 in the RS1800 and the BDG 2.0 in competition, with a 0.94-litre for Italy. Brakes: the base 1100 has front drums; most other variants have front discs with rear drums. Rear suspension is semi-elliptic leaf springs again, with an anti-tramp bar or radius arms on the performance models.
The trap on this car is the Mexico. The RS Mexico of early 1976 uses a 1.6 Pinto — not the 1.6 Kent crossflow of the Mk1 Mexico. Same badge, different engine, and nothing about the top end is shared. The RS2000 arrived in March 1975 on the 2.0 Pinto, with the droop-snoot polyurethane nose it is remembered for, and the RS1800 was available from the start. Mk2 Escorts were built at Halewood, Saarlouis, Genk, Dagenham, Cork, Azambuja, Homebush, Nazareth, Port Elizabeth, Taipei and Seaview, Lower Hutt; Ford Australia built 79,142 of them at Homebush from March 1975 to 1980, so an Australian-assembled car is a real possibility here.

- New Zealand and Australia
- Seaview, Lower Hutt is listed among the Mk2 plants — though the sources confirm the 1.1 and 1.3 Mk1 here explicitly and do not do the same for the Mk2. Ford Australia built 79,142 Mk2s at Homebush, March 1975 to 1980.
