- Built
- September 1956 – February 1968. Around 354,600 in all. Two-door saloon 100,284 · four-door 28,961 · van and Countryman AV5/AP5 138,356 · AV6 van 13,222 · AV8 1098 van 45,685 · AV8 848 van 14,230 · CKD 13,320.
- Engine
- 948cc BMC A-series, 34bhp, 8.3:1 compression. Van and pick-up used a low-compression version. AV8 van: 1098cc from October 1962, 848cc from 1963.
- Model codes
- AS5 four-door · A2S5 two-door · AK5 pick-up · AV5 van · AP5 Countryman · AV6 van and AP6 Countryman from April 1962 · AV8 van from October 1962.
- Gearbox
- Four-speed with a remote floor change and better-spaced ratios than the A30 — which is why the transmission tunnel is bigger.
- Brakes
- Lockheed, 7in drums. Hydraulic front; the rear works through the handbrake linkage rather than its own hydraulics, so it needs regular adjustment.
- Suspension
- Independent coil and wishbone front; live axle on semi-elliptic leaves at the rear. 13in wheels.
- April 1962 facelift
- AV6 van and AP6 Countryman: flashing indicators at last, non-indented doors, white-painted wheels and grille. Both very short-lived.
- The rarities
- AP6 Countryman: 74 built, one known survivor. AK5 pick-up: September 1956 to November 1957, fewer than 500 built.
- Pick-ups here
- 17 A35 pick-ups came to New Zealand. An estimated 11 or 12 remain, not all of them roadworthy.
- A35 or A30?
- The A35 has the larger wrap-around rear screen, the painted grille in a chrome surround, flashing indicators, the remote gearchange and bigger tunnel, no roof guttering and an 80mph speedo. Note the van kept trafficators until April 1962.
